FERNANDO CALZADILLA

At fifteen years old started to act in street theatre. Trained in the London Contemporary Dance school in the Graham technique. Gets acquainted with Grotowski’s research and the Biomechanics by the late 1960s and early 1970s. Has done several acting workshops. One of the most influential with the Performing Group in New York City. Was member of the Rajatabla theater group up to 1976 when he moves to New York to study Theatre Design at New York University.

Graduated in the class of 81, he has since designed more the seventy production in opera, ballet, theater, musicals and concerts for the Teatro Teresa Carreño, Compañia Nacional de Teatro, Ateneo de Caracas, Teatro Profesional de Venezuela, etc. He has worked with Román Chalbaud, José Ignacio Cabrujas, Carlos Gimenez, Isabel Palacios, Tito Capobianco among others.

He has been Consultant and Architectural Lighting Designer for the Centro de Artes de Maracaibo, Aula Magna de la Universidad del Zulia, Sociedad Dramatica de Maracaibo. Designed Lighting system for the Museo de la Ciudad de Clarines, Sala de diseño PDVSA, Edif. Consultores S. A. Centro San Ignacio (Shopping Mall) and Toons Discotheque.

Worked with artist Jacobo Borges in the installation Der Himmel Senkte Sich in Salzburg and Caracas. Presented El Mercado de Aca, an experimental ethnography at Rice University, Houston, Texas. Has Directed for theatre and conducted research projects with professional actresses in theater and community. Since 1989 directs the design and research office Casa Sello with continuos work in mural painting and art objects manufacture.
