On Friday, November 19, 1999 Masters Tchyjo and Tacainã gave a workshop on the Toré, the ritual song and dance of the Kariri-Xocó tribe of Brazil. The ritual features dances and songs based on the rhythm of the maraca, and is used on festive occasions as well as for healing and curing purposes. The Toré has been taught and performed outside the tribe as a form of therapy and self-knowledge. The workshop, which was sponsored by the Institute and the Department of Performance Studies at NYU, took place from 2-5 PM in the Studio of the Performance Studies Department.
