THE AUTO-DE-FÉ IN MEXICO

Public punishment, religious spectacle, display of  power of the Catholic Church. There are many ways to analyze the auto-de-fé. This tradition of the Spanish Inquisition to punish heretics in a public ceremony was soon brought to the colonies, and the ritual was especially grand in Mexico.  The following pages describe the auto-da-fé as it happened in Mexico, the rituals and symbols used by the Inquisition.
