Mitla, Oaxaca
During
pre-conquest times, Mitla was an important Zapotec religious center.
When the Spanish arrived, they built this church just behind the older
complex, using stones taken from the original buildings at Mitla.
This photo shows one of the original temple buildings in the foreground,
with the domes of the church immediately behind.

Tule, Oaxaca
This
tree, one of the oldest and largest in the Americas, was worshipped in
pre-conquest times as an ancestor of the Mixtec people. The Spanish built
the church of Santa Maria de Asuncion, as seen in this photo (dwarfed by
the tree), to mark this sacred place as a site of Christian worship.
