So a double tendency is noted as
appearing already in
the thirteenth century:
to accept slavery as
an essential condition of social
life, and yet at the same time
to exalt the power of election,
to insist upon the essential
equality of all men,
and even to bless
those who set free their slaves.
St Maurice, Magdeburg, 1250
