Negotiating the Border


 
 
 

Above is a map of the borders that were in negotiation during the drafting of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
Once signed on February 2, 1848, those Mexicans occupying former territory were "in waiting" for citizenship.
As the Mexican-American War ended through the signing of the treaty, citizenship and property rights were topics of conflict and debate.  During these times is when the first corridos became transmissable

As Americo Paredes states "it is during this time that what the Mexicans call their narrative folk songs became the corrido.  Especially those of epic themes, taking the name correr , which means "to run" or "to flow", for the corrido tells a story simply and swiftly, without embellishments".
