Rumba Columbia: COMPETENCIA

Columbia is a male dance with a strong Congo influence. It is the form born in the countryside and its dance is about destreza and experience. Rumba columbia is competencia, it is competitive, the dancer competes against the quinto, and/or other dancers. The singers also show their ability by inserting themselves sobre la marcha into the previous singer's phrase. Simultaneoulsy, they should be able to improvise either about the dancers' skills, the previous singer's narrative, or introduce their own narrative and life comentary. The function of Pullas is to challenge; in their best version, the serve to tease those willing to enter the circle

GUAGUANCO

Rumba Guaguancó: SEDUCTION

The Guaguancó is a couples dance, it is the competition between the male trying to vacunar the female, and the female “avoiding” to be vacunada. The vacunaó is a pelvic gesture, or body insinuation that articulates the rooster's symbolic penetration of the hen, the female dancer. The vacunaó is always aimed towards her reproductive parts. However, while it is a seduction game, and a fertility dance, it also functions as a dialectic flirt. In the guaguancó, the rooster proves destreza to surprise her, to improvise new forms of vacunaó that challenge her skills. But more important, it is about her wisdom to provoke him and capture his imagination . If he looses, he has to leave the floor open to the next contesting gallo.
