The
spatializing practice of terror transpires through varying
degrees of the spectacle. Spectacles of terror enter
both the localized and globalized public sphere through
an exertion of power executed by force. The spectacle as
enacted in a collectively occupied public space affects
its individuals in the psychic realm. In the spectacle’s
aftermath (train bombings in Madrid, suicide bombings in
Tel Aviv, military occupation of the Chiapas countryside),
the state apparatus responds to the act by assuming an active
and wider mobility in the name of national security to freely
impose its will upon the mobility of its citizenry. These
impositions manifest through juridical methods and industrial
complexes. This mobility has manifested in the sanctioned
monitoring of nation or state borders (INS transforming
into the Dept. of Homeland Security), the compromising of
citizenship rights (to assemble, to travel), and the manufacturing
of widespread psychological fear upon its citizenry (the
duct tape hysteria).
