This workgroup will look at the way in which artists in the Americas used the body in its material appearance (event) and its remainders (trace) as an instrument of political intervention. Notions of performance as “representation without reproduction” (Phelan), twice-behaved behavior (Schechner), and embodied memory (Taylor) will help us situate the aesthetic and political charge of the body in performance in regards to its tactic relationship with different temporalities.
