"Mayans and Performance: A Tour of Selected Sites"

The Zapatista uprising in 1994 was perhaps the most visible manifestation of a multi-faced movement in which Mayans and other indigenous groups, no longer content to exist on the margins of Mexican society or "for foreign consumption," are proclaiming subject status in the emerging world order. Away from the battle zones--and sometimes within them--theatre and other performance forms become important sites in which alternative histories are explored, imposed representations interrogated, and future prospects tested. This presentation considers such performance in the context of a richly ambivalent and pecularly postmodern confluence of people, movements, texts and technologies.
