Conflicts Between Migration and Culture in Oaxaca at the Dawn of the Twenty-first Century in Some Community Theater Plays

This study is an investigation of the ways in which a few community theater groups from the state of Oaxaca have dealt with the theme of migration in their plays. I will discuss some plays that were presented during the following time frame: the first half of the seventies through the late nineties. This period coincides with a noticeable increase in migration --mainly by the indigenous population of that state--- to the United States.

The analysis of the community theater plays examines lines of continuity and variations on the treatment of the theme of migration, as well as the techniques by which said theme was staged. In the conclusion I exemplify a change of intention, one which changes from didacticism ---in which the solution to a problem is the main focus--- to the questioning of a situation theatrically and socially --that is, the relationship between the migrants and their home communities.
