The Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics held its 4th
Annual Encuentro entitled "Spectacles of Religiosities" in New
York City from July 11-19, 2003. New York University and Tisch School
of the Arts hosted the seminar.
The
encuentros are an intensive nine-day exploration of the relation
between performance and politics in the Américas, featuring lectures,
performance workshops, participant mini-seminars, and performances. They
seek to bring together students, scholars, artists and activists to develop
models of intellectual and artistic inquiry that are specially suited
to the study of social and political formations in the Américas.
The
encuentros explore the potential offered by the emerging inter-disciplinary
field of Performance Studies to provide new means through which to understand
the relation between expressive culture (broadly construed as performance)
and political movements, identities, and social norms. The encuentros
curriculum draw on the combined expertise of leading faculty and artists
trained in performance and cultural studies from throughout the Americas.
