The Midway Mermaid
The Midway Mermaid is an exploration of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and its impact on the ecosystems at Midway Island. While singing an operatic lament, a mermaid is erased by a wave of plastic bottles, utensils, and other waste created by Encuentro participants over the course of the week and incorporated on site into the performance.
Biography
Jasmine Presson combines classical operatic training with experimental theatre. Caught at the intersection of antiquated “high art” and contemporary performance practices, Presson’s work seamlessly fuses opera with burlesque, improv, and performance art in reenactments of imagery from pop culture and the operatic canon.
