Galileo Galilei (1965)

In 1965, Teatro La Candelaria staged Galileo Gallilei, after Bertolt Brecht’s “Life of Galileo”. Group-directed by García, Carlos José Reyes, Carlos Perozzo, and Carlos Duplat, the production employed over 70 actors and 200 theatre workers. Like the original, La Candelaria’s version confronted the conflict between dogmatism and scientific proof, and explored the idea of resolve in the face of oppression through the life and trials of Galileo. The inclusion of a text referencing J. Robert Oppenheimer and the atomic bomb provoked complaints from the United States Embassy, terminating Galileo Galilei’s run at the University Theatre and García’s artistic affiliation with the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. García and his collaborators went on to found La Casa de Cultura and later Teatro La Candelaria where they would continue to use Brechtian techniques in a prolific body of work.
