Complexo do Alemão

The Complexo do Alemão series was created long before the recent State actions attempting to pacify some Rio de Janeiro areas outside government control. The flag and passport, beyond cartographic drawings of the slums, are ways of understanding that there is a parallel micro-nation that includes autonomous territories inside one of the largest Brazilian cities; as if the favelas were areas subtracted from the brazilian state.

Biography
Paulo Climachauska, born in 1962, lives in São Paulo. His work is centered on operations of subtraction and erasure. It is about a deficit that goes beyond numerical abstraction and tackles economic, social and political issues, even when the artist chooses nature as his subject.
