EMERGENYC 2017: Schedule of Events

The Requirements:

* The program requires active participation. Please let George know in advance if you have to miss a session.
* There will be a series of additional events outside of class/workshop time that will be required.
* Please bring a journal and a pen to every session.
* Dress in comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely.

Interrupting Public Habituation: Creating Public Performances (Part 1)
workshop led by Ed Woodham, with special guest Nicolás Dumit Estévez (Art in Odd Places)

Tuesday, 5/16 10am–1pm
Poetry and Performance: Writing in the Trump Era led by Pamela Sneed
The focus of the workshop will be creating poetry and non traditional texts for performance. We will look at writing through the lens of current events/political movements/history and autobiography. There will be some movement involved.

Manifesting Disruption as Cultural Intervention led by Sonia Guiñansaca

Dance Making/Movement workshop led by Patrícia Hoffbauer
Through creative writing prompts and short film clips, attendees will explore the ways in which migrant/undocumented artists and cultural workers intentionally disrupt the current political climate, and break down limitations to manifest the worlds they want to live in. Goals for the workshop are for attendees to leave with tangible frameworks around cultural strategy, and to depart from the limitation of art & borders.

125th and Freedom workshop led by Ebony Noelle Golden
125th and Freedom: Conjuring Home examines the cultural and sociopolitical significance and impact of the displacement of vulnerable communities due to gentrification and other social, political and economic forces. Students will explore concepts of home in a colonized territory, rituals for honoring the land, environmental racism, and sustainable strategies for collective action. Students will be introduced to Golden’s approach to building performance work which is rooted in technologies of creative emancipation, ethnography, cultural organizing, embodied research, choreopoetics, and womanist ritual performance. The goal of is to engender sustained strategies that interrupt the systematic displacement of people, cultural practices, and historical legacies through the deep investigation of theoretical and creative texts, artistic modalities, media, writing, and collaborative performance.

This workshop is a laboratory about transformation. A unique experience that will allow you to open and reconnect with creative forces that you didn’t even know were there.
