Curated by Luis Gispert and Gean Moreno
This is a presentation of the work of six Cuban video producers and filmmakers who work in an essayistic mode that often involves encounters with marginalized social spaces and cultures. Ranging from the 1960s and 70s documentaries of the late Nicolás Guillén Landrián to the current projects of Magdiel Aspillaga, the selection engages questions of immediacy and quality, while probing spaces and customs that usually exist beyond the scope of the mainstream. Often turning their cameras on Afro-Cuban communities, the countryside, and immigrant neighborhoods in the West, these cultural producers present realities that are often kept at the social edges. But they do this while complicating the very nature of the documentary as an objective entity.
