José Muñoz (New York University)

This teach-in will introduce the field of performance studies. We will discuss major topics in the field. Our discussion will explicate and compare different critical approaches to the study of performance that will include but not be limited to performance ethnography, the performativity of language, liveness, political performance, the intersection of performance and technology, performance documentation, technology and the performativity of gender and race. The topics will be woven into a larger narrative that aims to familiarize participants with the history of the field. Theoretical paradigms will be illustrated by selections of pivotal moments in the history of performance art.
