Lecture: The Adventures of a Progressive Lady: Writing and Teaching in 19th Century Mexico by Mílada Bazant

November 7, 2011 at 5pm

Laura Méndez de Cuenca was one of the first Mexican professionals to explore the fields of feminism and education. She lived the shift from a traditional Catholic society to a modern and secular one. Her multiple talents enabled her to overcome the obstacles of a patriarchal society, endure the rejection of her contemporaries, and live a “free” life based on arduous effort.

Mílada Bazant received her PhD in social sciences from the Colegio de Michoacán. Her work has focused on the history of education, the history of everyday life and biography between 1850-1930. She is currently working on and promoting the somewhat forgotten genre of the biography in Mexico and writing a biography of a rural teacher entitled La vida cotidiana escolar en los tiempos de Clemente Antonio Neve: escenarios rurales y urbanos, tradicionales y modernos: 1850-1904  (Everyday School Life in the Times of Clemente Antonio Neve: Rural and Urban, Traditional and Modern Landscapes, 1850-1904)

Lecture will be in Spanish. Free, photo ID required.
