Roundtable / Mesa Redonda
Abstract:
This document sums up the presentations and discussion that took place during the round table "Sexuality and politics: performative approaches", at Mexico City's National University (UNAM) on August 16, 2005. Nine artists and academics gathered for the occasion, invited by Marisa Belausteguigoitia of the UNAM's Gender Studies Program (PUEG) and Antonio Prieto of the Performing Arts Research Center of Yucatán (CINEY). Each participant addressed the topic at hand from her or his particular experience as a researcher, critic, or performing artist.
Raquel Araujo, Concepción León, Mónica Mayer and Ema Villanueva spoke from their perspectives as women performers working at the margins of the Mexican theatre arts establishment. Hortensia Moreno and Porfirio Miguel Hernández addressed the LGBT Pride Parades in Mexico City using performance theory analytical tools. Ana Cristina Ramírez discussed the ambivalent literary and visual representations of Eréndira, a mythical indigenous woman who confronted the Spanish conquerors on horseback. Finally, Marisa Belausteguigoitia addressed the performative possibilities of subaltern bodies before Law, taking as reference points the murders of poor women in Mexico's northern border, and the resistance of indigenous people of Chiapas in Mexico's southern border. Antonio Prieto served as commentator and moderator of the lively discussion that took place at the end of the individual presentations.
