Lupe & JuanDi from the Block

Director: Fulana

El Indio Juan Diego is excited because he turned white when he was canonized by the Vatican (a "cross-over make-over" miracle!). The Virgin of Guadalupe is not so thrilled. Inspired by Our Lady of J-Lo, the Fulanas stage an imaginary war of words —on the hyper-commercialization of religious icons and the "whitening" of Latinos when they cross over into mainstream pop culture—between the "Brown Virgin" (G-Loop) and the new JuanDi.

Biography

Fulana is a video and performance collective created in 2000 by four Latinas in New York City (Cristina Ibarra, Marlène Ramírez-Cancio, Lisandra Ramos-Grullón & Andrea Thome). Using parody and satire, their work delves into topics affecting the Latino communities in the U.S., and responds to the ways products and ideas are marketed and sold to us through the mass media.
