Artists Nicolás Dumit Estévez’s and Merdith Holch’s stay in Banner, Wyoming in the spring of 2008 yielded the plot for a five-minute video, shot on location in a town of forty inhabitants and a thousand private acres. In the mythology of the USA, the West conjures up images of cowboys and Indians, the gold rush, saloons, bandits and outlaws. Even today, endless expanses of land give visitors the impression of an open-to-all geography where one can pursue the outdated American Dream side by side with massive buffaloes and cute prairie dogs, and let’s not forget herds of docile cows. In this playful and sometimes goofy look at the Wild Wild West, the outsider protagonist attempts to get in touch with his inner cowboy. But the landscape reveals itself as a place out of reach.
