Excerpt

The following texts, documents, and photographs were generated during Life as Material for Art and Vice Versa, a series of performance art workshops at the Queens Museum of Art and at the Elmhurst and Steinway branches of the Queens Library. The workshops were conceived and taught by Nicolás Dumit Estévez. He was assisted by Liz Baber.

During these hands-on workshops participants tapped into their everyday lives to develop visual or written narratives that were then used as material for art to create performance then undertook careful observations, discussions, and critiques of overtly mundane activities such as walking, talking, sleeping, shopping, and eating, using the information collected to develop private or public performances and actions. The works produced during the workshops were presented by the participants at the Queens Museum of Art on April 5, 2008. The event included both live performances and documented actions.
